What causes wrinkles?
Our face is often one of the first areas to show the signs of ageing. Age spots, dry skin, crow’s feet, wrinkles, sagging skin, dark circles and generally looking tired are all big contributors to ageing skin.
There are many factors that contribute to the onset of wrinkles, including:
- Ageing: As you get older, from age 30 onwards, your skin becomes thinner due to loss of collagen.
- Facial muscle contractions: You use the facial muscles in your body to smile, frown or squint. Over time, these muscles cause frown lines between your eyebrows and crows feet at the corners of your eyes because of weakened fat or bone mass and the effects of gravity on your skin.
- Sun damage: Exposing your skin to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays can cause your skin to age prematurely. The sun can damage collagen in your skin, which provides the elasticity and flexibility your skin needs to prevent wrinkles.
- Smoking: Tobacco products cause your body to slow down its production of collagen. Too little collagen causes wrinkles.
We can reduce the signs of ageing by making simple lifestyle changes which include :

- eating a healthy diet.
At Kingsport Dental Clinic we offer anti-wrinkle injections using Botulinum toxin type A (Botox®). When injected in small doses into specific muscles, Botox® keeps the muscles from contracting. When the muscles can’t tighten, the skin appears smoother and less wrinkled.
Anti-wrinkle/ muscle relaxing injections works well for :

- brow lifting
- gummy smile
- jaw pain
The effect typically lasts several months. Repeat injections are needed to maintain results.
Dermal Filler
Wrinkles that remain at rest may require filler to fill in or lift skin with deep wrinkles.
Dermal fillers are one of the most popular anti-ageing treatments. Fillers are made from Hyaluronic Acid, which is a natural substance found in the body. Hyaluronic acid is able to hold up to 1000 times its own weight in water which helps to hydrate the skin. As well as keeping the skin hydrated, when injected, it is also able to plump and smooth wrinkles and furrows which in turn can also reduce the appearance of fine lines.
- Dermal Fillers can add volume and definition to the face.
- Particularly effective in creating more prominent cheeks, and fuller lips reducing the appearance of lines around the nose and mouth.
- Dermal fillers can also be used at certain points in the face to give the impression of a facelift which is known as the 8-point lift.
- Treatment takes around 30 minutes to perform.
- Results are instant, but they are best seen a week or so after treatment once any swelling has subsided.
- Minimal downtime, some patients may experience bruising and swelling but this should disappear within a week.
- Results can last anywhere from 4 to 13 months depending on the areas being treated and the type of filler used.
