Dental Inlays & Onlays

  • For repairing decayed or damaged teeth.
  • For reinforcing teeth with large restorations.
  • For restoring aesthetics

If a back tooth has a large restoration or cavity or if the cusp has broken it is advisable to have a dental inlay or onlay.

Once the tooth has been prepared it is scanned with our 3D intra-oral scanner ( no need for messy impressions) and then the scan is either sent to our in-house CEREC milling machine or sent to one of our laboratories to have the restoration made.

Thanks to advances in digital technology (called CAD/CAM) the inlays and onlays can be made at the dental practice using our CEREC milling machine.

This means you will need fewer visits to the practice to have your tooth restored.

They can be made from different materials such as composite, ceramics or porcelain.

The restoration is then bonded to the tooth.

What is the difference between dental inlays and onlays?

Dental Inlays

Dental inlays are designed to fill a portion of the inside of the tooth where the cavity is large and not ideal for a direct build up with a filling material. This will improve the durability of the restoration and the aesthetics of the tooth.

Dental Onlays

Dental Onlays are similar to dental inlays but they are generally bigger and designed to cover the entire top of the tooth.
